On a very rainy Saturday morning we headed off to hike the Steenbras River Trail (aka Crystal Pools) in Gordon’s Bay.

Thankfully we drove out of the downpour and into the most beautiful hiking weather…

As usual, stunning views throughout the walk. Below are Richard and Karen at one of the water stops.

We hiked one pool further than when I hiked this last year with Allan and Jo. From here there are at least two more pools to explore but it was way past lunch time.

We sat above the waterfall from last year and ate our sarmies while looking at the view of the pool below.

Ruth and Kate watching the the people crazy enough to brave the cold water. Kate joined in and Ruth (wisely) sun-napped on the rock.

So awesome having the Meechies join us!

A last shot of the group before heading back for supper. So all in all there was Me and Richard, Ruth, Jean and Kate, Karen and Ryan, Craig and Janet, and Josh. And a big thank you to Aunty Meechie for baby sitting Hannah, it was great to go hiking with Craig and Jan for the first time in a while!

Edit: We had done this hike before in 2006 (Crystal Pools 2006)

  1. Also, for those interested in doing the hike, you can get permits from the Sunbird Bed and Breakfast which is the last bnb as you leave Gordon’s Bay before you go over the Steenbras River Bridge.

Their contact number is: 0218561740 and the permits for us this time were R10pp.

  2. These are stunning pics, girl. You’re officially hired as family photographer!!

  4. ok, found it!! sorry! :)

  5. how long did it take to hike up?

  6. If I remember correctly, it’s about an hour and a half each way, if that, and a fairly gentle walk. Once you get to the first pools you have the option to keep going up the mountain and to more pools further up.
