We took advantage of the long Easter weekend by taking a trip to see my family in Scotland.

On Saturday afternoon we went to the farm in the Borders. In this photo, Richard is standing in Scotland, and over the river behind him is England.

We also caught a glimpse of some deer in the woods. It was interesting to see (in the wood further up the hill) how closely the trees grow together. I’ve always wondered how people could get lost in the wood, but when you see how little light gets in and how little space there is, it definitely looks easier to get lost in.

In the bottom of the picture you can see the stone wall that marks the border. It veers off to the left and the hills you see in the background (called the Hamiltons) are in Scotland. They’re part of the farm and we decided to walk to the top of the one on the right. Another great thing about Scotland is that there is no tresspassing law. You can walk anywhere across the fields provided that you don’t do any damage.

This was taken at the top looking down towards the farm house.

This is Jess, the Maguire’s puppy. It was fun taking her for walks in the sleet and snow next to the river and even though it was freezing, she still decided to take a swim!

On Sunday we joined John, Wendy and the kids at the mountain biking place called Glentress just outside of Galashiels. It was very very cold! Wendy, Linsday and I took a walk in the forest while the others biked. This made me even colder, but it made the hot chocolate at the end all the more yummy.

On Monday, Richard and I walked through Melrose before heading home. We always enjoy looking at the monuments of the places we visit and I we found this unicorn on a pillar. Bizarre, and we don’t have any idea what it’s there for. Hopefully we’ll find out next time.

So it was a seriously awesome weekend. And yay for my first snow!
